Why do we struggle so much with leadership issues? One reason is that many popular ideas about what makes a strong leader are based on myth rather than reality. Let's look at some of these myths and compare them with what's actually the case in the real world.
- Myth 1: Leadership is a rare talent that you must be born with
Leadership is the ability to influence people so as to get things done. Whilst it's true that some people have more natural ability to successfully lead than others, leadership can be learned and developed over time.
Good ‘natural' leaders who don't develop their skills are often surpassed by those with less natural ability who put in the time and effort that's required to be an effective leader.
- Myth 2: Leaders must be charismatic and have an outgoing personality
Charisma is not a prerequisite for success as a leader. In fact, many outstanding companies have been built by shy and self-effacing leaders.
You don't need to have a particular personality or be a particular size, shape, age, gender or cultural background to be a successful leader.
The two most important leadership traits are personal integrity and professional competence. Both are needed to gain trust and respect; these are what set the foundation for true leadership.
- Myth 3: Effective leaders control and manipulate others
Leadership is not about exercising power over others.
Good leaders see their role as developing a vision that everyone wants to work towards.
They set a clear direction with ambitious goals, provide the resources and create an environment that enables people to make a valuable contribution.
Effective leaders don't pursue self-interest or dominate others - they focus on doing what's best for the company and its people.
- Myth 4: Leaders are only at the top of an organisation
You don't need a title or a high position to be a leader. You can be the receptionist and show leadership in your job.
In fact, great companies are those where leadership is encouraged and rewarded at all levels. In these companies individuals everywhere take responsibility for making extraordinary things happen.
True leadership isn't easy - it's one of the most challenging and rewarding roles you'll ever have. But be encouraged ... anyone can become a better leader and everyone is called to be a leader in some way.
